What is gynaecomastia surgery

Gynecomastia surgery, also known as male breast reduction, is aimed at reducing the size of enlarged male breasts. This condition, known as gynecomastia, can be caused by hormonal imbalances, weight gain, the use of certain medications, or unknown reasons. The surgery involves the removal of excess breast tissue, fat, and sometimes skin, to achieve a flatter, more masculine chest contour. Techniques may include liposuction, excision, or a combination of both, depending on the severity and composition of the breast tissue.

Is gynaecomastia surgery for me?

Gynecomastia surgery may be suitable for you if you have enlarged male breasts that cause discomfort, self-consciousness, or emotional distress. Ideal candidates are in good overall health, have stable body weight, and have not seen improvement with other treatments. This surgery can effectively reduce breast size, resulting in a flatter, more masculine chest contour.

During the procedure

During gynecomastia surgery, the procedure may involve liposuction, where small incisions are made and a thin tube (cannula) is used to remove excess fat. Alternatively, or additionally, excision techniques may be employed, making incisions around the areola or chest creases to remove excess glandular tissue, fat, and sometimes skin. The incisions are then closed with sutures, and dressings are applied. Post-operative care instructions are provided to support proper healing and recovery.

After gynaecomastia surgery

  • Rest and Compression Garments: Wear compression garments for 6 to 8 weeks to support healing and reduce swelling.

  • Wound Care: Keep incision sites clean and dry

  • Avoid Strenuous Activity: Refrain from heavy lifting and vigorous exercise for 4 weeks

  • Medication: Take prescribed pain relievers and antibiotics as directed

  • Sutures: Usually absorbable, liposuction sutures removed at 7 days
