What is a tummy tuck

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a cosmetic surgical procedure aimed at improving the appearance of the abdomen. It involves removing excess skin and fat from the abdominal area and tightening the underlying muscles to create a smoother, firmer profile. The goal of a tummy tuck is to restore a more youthful and toned abdominal contour.

Is a tummy tuck for me?

A tummy tuck may be suitable for you if you have excess skin, fat, or weakened abdominal muscles that do not respond to diet and exercise, often due to significant weight loss or pregnancy. Ideal candidates are in good overall health and are at a stable weight. This procedure can help achieve a smoother, firmer abdominal profile.

If you have any of these wishes, this operation is indeed for you.

During the procedure

During a tummy tuck, a horizontal incision is made at the underwear line, kept sufficiently low. The abdominal skin is lifted to expose the underlying muscles, which are then tightened. Excess fat and skin are removed, and the remaining skin is repositioned to create a smoother, firmer abdomen. The navel is also repositioned to a natural-looking location. The incisions are closed with sutures, and dressings are applied to support healing and protect the area.

After a tummy tuck

  • Rest and Elevation: Rest and keep your upper body elevated to reduce swelling.

  • Medication: Take prescribed pain relievers and antibiotics as directed.

  • Wound Care: Keep the incision sites clean and dry.

  • Avoid Strenuous Activities: Refrain from heavy lifting and vigorous exercise for 4-6 weeks.

  • Supportive Garments: Wear a compression garment for 6 weeks to support the healing process and minimize swelling.

  • Sutures: Usually absorbable sutures.
